Empowering Lamitan’s Youth: Lamitan City Gears Up for the Upcoming Bangsamoro Parliamentary Election Through Townhall Session

The Catholic Relief Services (CRS) in partnership with the City Government of Lamitan headed by Mayor Oric Furigay successfully conducted a transformative Youth Roll-out Townhall Session on the Voters’ Education and Awareness Campaign held on March 06, 2024, at the Lamitan City Gymnasium. This session aimed to empower not just the young people but also the other sectors in the upcoming Bangsamoro Parliamentary Election

The Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is an international humanitarian and development agency of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops which has been operating in the Philippines since 1945. The strategic programs of CRS are focused on emergency response, disaster risk reduction, peacebuilding and governance, and integrated youth development.

This one-day session facilitated by the Local Youth Development Office, City Information Office, and trained facilitators served as a tool that helped increase awareness, understanding, and engagement of the young people and other sectors in the key topics discussed: Bangsamoro Electoral Code, parliamentary procedures, Voter’s Rights and Responsibilities, TAPG and the importance of Moral Governance. Furthermore, lectures about the Faith-Based Perspective on Voting were presented, emphasizing the role that religion plays in civic responsibilities and engagement.

The success of this session was made possible through the support of the UK Government’s peace-building initiatives. A diverse range of participants including women, fisherfolk, farmers, religious leaders, settler communities, IPs, PWDs, and members of different youth organizations also contributed to the event’s success making it more meaningful and impactful.

Special recognition was also given to Ms. Miriam Suacito, focal person of CRS in Basilan and Executive Director of NAGDILAAB Foundation Inc. Resource speakers Ustadz Alim Bayan Marujin (IP Representative), Sr. Susan Bolanio (Prelature of Social Action, Justice, and Peace), Ms. Sherina Mina Ilul, and Mr. Hamudi Jakilan were also commended for their dedication in sharing their knowledge and insights that enriched the discussions.

Lastly, Mayor Oric Furigay expressed his appreciation and support for this kind of noble initiative, highlighting its role in fostering a future where empowered citizens play a vital role in promoting peace and democracy. The Townhall Session serves as a stepping stone towards a more informed and engaged electorate in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
